HOW AXED ANCELOTTI LOST LOVE AND SUPPORT AT BAYERN MUNICH AND ULTIMATELY HIS JOB (images)

HOW AXED ANCELOTTI LOST LOVE AND SUPPORT AT BAYERN MUNICH AND ULTIMATELY HIS JOB

The Italian has been unceremoniously removed from his post at the Allianz Arena amid accusations that members of his squad no longer supported him
On September 28, 2017, Carlo Ancelotti was ushered through the exits at Bayern Munich having been unceremoniously relieved of his managerial duties.
That decision was taken less than 24 hours after a 3-0 defeat to big-spending Paris Saint-Germain and five months after the Italian had guided Bayern to another Bundesliga title.

NOW
He now finds himself without a job amid accusations that he lost the support of certain members of his squad, but how did it come to this for one of the most accomplished coaches in the business?

IN THE BEGINNING

Franck Ribery Carlo Ancelotti Bayern Munich

Bayern announced the appointment of Ancelotti as their head coach in December 2015, with a successor quickly identified for Manchester City-bound Pep Guardiola.
The general consensus was that the Bundesliga giants had secured themselves the services of one of the finest man-managers around, with ex-players and so-called experts quick to hail the Italian’s ability to bring the best of star-studded squads – having done so at the likes of Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
For a while all seemed well, with Bayern opening his reign with a 6-0 mauling of Werder Bremen, leading former favourite Mehmet Scholl to suggest that the Bavarian outfit had broken the chains of Guardiola’s regimented rule.
The players seemed happy as well, with France international Franck Ribery telling Goal in September 2016 : "Carlo Ancelotti is a chilled, accessible guy. He loves his players, that's what we realise. He is looking for contact, he laughs with us, he asks us how we are every day. This relationship is important. Ancelotti is a champion in all respects. Otherwise it would be impossible to create such a harmonious atmosphere. That's how you are successful together."
Ancelotti added to Goal a month later on his early experiences : "I found the team was in really, really good shape, good condition and with great knowledge. The foundations were really good so I never wanted to change them. Every coach has his own idea of football so I tried to implement my idea without having a revolution. I know what the team is doing very well because they learned a lot in the last three years. I try to do something new. Sometimes when you bring new ideas the players become more focused, they gain concentration."
At this stage, the playing staff welcomed a new-found freedom on the pitch, along with training sessions which had become less demanding. They were, however, to soon start pining for the more rigorous methods of Guardiola.

TURNING POINT

Borussia Dortmund Bayern Munich
Ancelotti’s inability to retain the trust of his players was a slow process, with positive results helping to keep the collective mood upbeat and everybody pulling in the same direction.
The securing of another Bundesliga crown in April 2016 helped to paper over a few cracks, but a 3-2 defeat to arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal was considered to be a turning point.
Doubts were now being cast over Ancelotti’s old school methods and their ability to deliver long-term success.
Players and club management hoped that things would get better in 2017-18, but that soon proved not to be the case – with Bayern suffering an unexpected defeat to Hoffenheim in early September before throwing away a two-goal lead against Wolfsburg to drop more priceless points.
All of a sudden the cracks were there for all to see, with greater attention being paid to divides within the camp – Thomas Muller’s claims that he was “not in demand” following a win at Werder Bremen, Ribery throwing his shirt away against Anderlecht and Ancelotti’s reluctance to discuss Robert Lewandowski’s criticism of the club’s transfer policy .

REACHING THE END

PSG Bayern UEFA Champions League 27092017
With uncomfortable questions already being asked of his ongoing presence, Ancelotti saw the final nails put in his coffin during a Champions League trip to Paris.
Bayern had an opportunity to lay down a marker in that contest against an emerging force in the European game, but they failed to do so.
Ancelotti only informed his players of his selection shortly before the match, with no explanation offered for the absences of Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng, Arjen Robben and Ribery .
In the wake of a humbling defeat, the axe came down and club president Uli Hoeness was forced to admit that his manager had lost control of proceedings .
He told Sport1 : "We didn't make this decision because we lost one game. The club saw a development which was heading in the wrong direction over the last few weeks and months. Even that would not have been too bad, but the fact Carlo lost five players in my eyes - Kingsley Coman as well – made the situation impossible. As a coach you cannot have the most important players against you."

THE AFTERMATH

Carlo Ancelotti Bayern coach
The feeling now is that Ancelotti’s faults were allowed to be masked for too long.
Even when his tenure opened with a run of eight successive victories, his side did not perform to the standard expected of them – with individual quality often winning out over tactical mastery.
Article continues below
In contrast to Guardiola before him, who demanded perfection, Ancelotti was seemingly happy to settle for good enough.
He would often tell the press in post-match interviews that he had been pleased with below-par performances, with, in his opinion, too much emphasis placed on strategies.
Ancelotti, it would appear, was blind to opposition he faced, with the 58-year-old always in trouble once he started to lose the support of those at the core of the club.

Mikel wins MOTM award in Tianjin Teda win

Mikel wins MOTM award in Tianjin Teda win

•  Arrives tomorrow for Zambia
• Explains why Super Eagles deserve to qualify

Captain of the Super Eagles John Obi Mikel will arrive Nigeria tomorrow ahead of their October 7th World Cup 2018 qualifiers clash against Zambia in Uyo.
Mikel was voted the Man of The Match (MOTM) for his Chinese side Tianjin Teda in their 3-1 win over Guizhou Hengfeng Zhicheng, which helped them move out of the basement of the League table in the Chinese Super League.
Although he didn’t get on the score sheet, he was very lively and set up the third goal which helped his team kill off the tie after Guizhou Hengfeng Zhicheng have pulled a goal back.
His performance in the game lead to many fans of the club attributing their poor season to his absence after injury ruled him out for three months, few games into the start of the Chinese season.
The Chinese league won’t have weekend games, this is so done to allow players called up by their national team to honour the call, and travel on time due to the miles involve in travelling from China.
Meanwhile, Mikel feels that the Super Eagles deserve to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals next month.
The former Chelsea FC central midfielder was speaking to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) official website.
“I must admit that I applaud the resurgence of the Zambians this late in the qualifiers. Beating Algeria home and away is no mean feat,” he said.
“We will take them very serious on 7th October because they clearly have a new spirit. It is time we wrap this up,” he continued.
“We have all shown professionalism, dedication and determination to be at the pole position in a group tagged ‘Group of Death’.
“Commendations must go to the entire team and the Coach, but we must finish it up in Uyo and secure our ticket right there.”

MOSES READY TO STOP FREE-SCORING MANCHESTER CITY RUN

MOSES READY TO STOP FREE-SCORING MANCHESTER CITY RUN

By Joe Apu
FREE-SCORING Manchester City take their goals

hunt to the Stanford Bridge as they confront defending English Premier League champions Chelsea today at the Stanford Bridge. Just last season, Chelsea did the double over Pep Guardiola’s side, Eden Hazard scoring three times over two games and the Belgian will make just his second Premier League start of the season in the evening kick-off with Nigeria’s
Victor Moses ready for action. The Blues were unable to break down a resolute Arsenal side at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago but have scored 15 goals in the three games around the visit of the Gunners.
Such a goal record is only beaten by Guardiola & Co., who already have 21 goals to their name in their six league games with Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling sharing 15 between them already.
Eden Hazard is likely to start after coming through Wednesday’s trip to Atletico Madrid un- scathed.
There remains slight doubts over Pedro’s involvement but Antonio Conte was more positive over the Spaniard in midweek af- ter naming him on the bench.
David Luiz is suspended meaning captain Gary Cahill will likely come in despite concerns over his form seeing him lose his place recently.
Alvaro Morata was seen limp- ing through the mixed zone after the win over Atleti, and his condition is unclear.
Manchester City suffered a setback in midweek with Benjamin Mendy expected to face
lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in the 5-0 win over Crystal Palace.
The summer signing will now fly to Barcelona to be assessed by a specialist, with Fabian Delph deputising well at Selhurst Park and Shakhtar Donetsk.
David Luiz completes his 3-match ban for the Blues, hav- ing been dismissed for a reck- less challenge on Arsenal’s Sead Kolašinac earlier this month.
Manchester City have been blazing the goal trail of late, so Guardiola has the unenviable task of choosing between all of the at- tacking options at his disposal.
Danny Drinkwater is still ruled out following his deadline day move from Leicester City, while Eden Hazard is pushing for a start after being eased back into first team action. Willian could be the man to make way, in Conte’s preferred 3-4-3.
Álvaro Morata proved that there is much more to his game than just an aerial threat when he bagged a hat-trick against Stoke City last weekend in Chelsea’s 4-0 romp.
The early signs suggest that he is more than capable of filling the sizeable void left by Diego Cos- ta’s departure, so the City game should provide more clues as to just how good he is.
Guardiola will be hoping that Vincent Kompany is fit enough to be involved but the short term prognosis does not look good for Benjamin Mendy who is flying out to Barcelona to have his knee assessed by a specialist.
The big question mark is whether or not Gabriel Jesus gets the nod to start alongside Agüero up front.

Presidency afraid I’ll defeat Buhari in 2019 – Fayose

Presidency afraid I’ll defeat Buhari in 2019 – Fayose

…’Why they want to scuttle my presidential ambition’

Ekiti State Governor, Chief Ayodele Fayose, has said the imminent defeat of President Muhammadu Buhari in a free and fair election in 2019 is the major reason the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government is harassing and intimidating his aides and associates.
He also said the blunt truth he told Nigerians during his declaration of interest that Buhari and the APC had nothing good to offer Nigeria has pierced the conscience of APC leaders and given them wounded heart.
He, however, said he won’t be intimidated into abandoning a divine project of rescuing the country from maladministration.
Fayose, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, on Friday, said notwithstanding needless harassment, whoever thought he could stop a moving train with bare hands would have himself to blame in the end.
The governor described the arrest of two officials of the state by agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as the height of impunity, as a competent court of jurisdiction had ordered against such action.
The governor said the action of the EFCC was in flagrant disobedience to the orders of Justice Taiwo. O. Taiwo of the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti in the case of the Attorney General of Ekiti State versus EFCC, IGP and 16 others granted on November 7, 2016.
The order reads in part: ” an order of interim injunction restraining the 1st and 2nd defendants (which is the EFCC and the Inspector General of Police, their agents, privies or any other investigative agencies, howsoever described) from arresting, detaining or investigating any person or persons, whether past or present officials in the Ekiti State Government, without any report of indictment from the Ekiti State House of Assembly pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice filed in this suit “.
While contending that the order of the court had not been vacated or appealed by the agency, the governor added that the agency’s action showed desperation and political partisanship, as it had earlier petitioned against Justice Taiwo asking that the case be transferred to Akure, Ondo State.
” The new judge declined jurisdiction because he held that the EFCC’s case lacked merit and the case file was returned to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, who is yet to assign the case.
“The latest action by the EFCC is therefore premeditated, malicious, politically motivated, contemptuous and unconstitutional in all ramifications. It is another clear and undisguised evidence of gangsterism by an agency that derives its power from the constitution but uses it for political vendetta against the opposition.
” While we call on all men and women of conscience to call the EFCC and whoever is goading them along perilous path to order, we must warn that no harm must come the way of the illegally detained Ekiti State Government officials, who have health issues which they will be hampered to manage effectively in EFCC’s crushing detention environment.
“Not obeying court orders is not the hallmark of democracy, but a virtue of anti-democratic agents. Colonel Dasuki Sambo, former National Security Adviser is still being held despite numerous court orders to the contrary. Ibrahim el-Zakyzaky has been locked up unduly for months, this is not the democracy we fought to enthrone in Nigeria,” he said.

Nnamdi Kanu not in our custody, says DHQ

Nnamdi Kanu not in our custody, says DHQ

From Fred Ezeh, Abuja

Contrary to widespread speculation that leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, may have been held by the military, the Army Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said yesterday that it had no knowledge of the whereabouts of the secessionist campaigner.
Defence spokesman, John Enenche, who addressed journalists in Abuja categorically declared that DHQ could not be held responsible for the missing IPOB leader.
He also denied that the military invaded the country home of Kanu in Abia State. He said: “I watched the operations live. I also got first hand information from our men on ground. For the records, Nnamdi Kanu was never taken away by the military.”
The IPOB leader’s whereabouts remained unknown since the soldiers executing the second phase of military operation code-named, “Python Dance or Egwu Eke” allegedly invaded his house.
He is due to appear in court this October for the continuation of his trail.

Deployment of soldiers to S’East, an intimidation of Igbo –Gen. Williams

Deployment of soldiers to S’East, an intimidation of Igbo –Gen. Williams

• Withdraw them now, he tells President

Calls for restructuring have been described as a waste of time and energy and will lead to nowhere. Making this assertion in an interview with TUNDE THOMAS, a renowned anti-corruption crusader and retired Army General, Maj.-Gen. Ola Ishola-Williams (retd) noted that what Nigeria needs is not restructuring but constitution amendment to address the ongoing agitations in different parts of the country.
Ishola-Williams also spoke on other national issues including the declaration of IPOB as a terrorist organization, Nnamdi Kanu’s travails, calls on Buhari to run in 2019, influx of illegal arms into the country and former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s advice to President Muhammadu Buhari on Nnamdi Kanu and a host of others.
What’s your reaction to the recent declaration of the Nnamdi Kanu-led IPOB as a terrorist organization by the Defence Headquarters?
The issue has not only become a subject of national debate but  very controversial as opinions are divided over the categorization of IPOB as a terrorist organization, and amid that debate and controversies, the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation had declared that IPOB was only proscribed by the Federal Government, and what that means is that the organization, whether it has been declared a terrorist organization or not, it has been banned.
In spite of the ban, IPOB can still go to court to challenge the validity of that ban by the Federal Government.
To be able to do that successfully, IPOB must be a registered organization – that means that if IPOB is not registered by a relevant body, then it becomes an illegal organization, and there is no way it can challenge that ban by the Federal Government.
Having said this, I believe strongly that Operation Python Dance is a needless one. It is an overkill; the Federal Government should have used the police to quell any form of disturbance or perceived threat to peace by Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB.
Drafting the military to deal with Kanu and IPOB was needless; it shows that Boko Haram insurgency is not occupying Nigeria. It shows that the military is not too preoccupied with how to tame the deadly Boko Haram insurgency. The Federal Government should order troops withdrawal immediately from Aba and other parts of the South East. The police should be allowed to contain IPOB’s crisis.
As part of efforts to find a lasting solution to Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB’s agitations, some eminent Nigerians have canvassed dialogue rather than the use of force. Even some, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo  advised President Muhammadu Buhari to have a one-on-one dialogue with Nnamdi Kanu, what’s your take on that?
I also believe in dialogue. Dialogue should be the best preferred option in resolving crisis. But I prefer President Buhari having dialogue with Ohaneze leaders and the South East governors, and other Igbo elders who are already making efforts at finding a lasting solution to the problem.
Obasanjo’s advice is wrong. How can Buhari invite Kanu for dialogue? Dialogue for what? Buhari doing so would also amount to undermining ongoing efforts by Ohaneze and South East governors to find solution to the crisis.
Obasanjo should keep quiet, if he doesn’t know what to say again or advice to give. With due respect to him, Obasanjo is a hypocrite. When he was the President between 1999 and 2007, did he invite anybody for dialogue or discussion before he sent troops to destroy Odi in Bayelsa State and Zaki Biam in Benue State? Obasanjo should not be taken serious; he is only playing to the gallery.
I don’t expect Obasanjo to make that statement. His advice that Buhari should dialogue with Kanu is very wrong.
By asking Buhari to meet Kanu, is Obasanjo legitimising the actions of Nnamdi Kanu some of which are very wrong?
I’m highly disappointed with Obasanjo. As a retired General and former President, he shouldn’t have made that statement. Is Obasanjo trying to elevate Kanu above Ohaneze leaders and the Southeast governors?
The other time, that was how he went to meet the father of a Boko Haram leader, a known terrorist under the guise of helping the Federal Government to seek an amicable way to resolve the Boko Haram insurgency. Honestly, some of the actions often taken by Obasanjo and some of his comments do not show or reflect strategic thinking expected of a retired General and a former President.
Again, asking Buhari to meet Kanu one-on-one for dialogue will also boost Kanu’s ego. He might even start seeing himself as Igbo leader or hero of a sort, which he is not. You can never compare Kanu to somebody like Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu or any other renowned, prominent Igbo leader. It is balderdash to ask Buhari to meet Kanu for dialogue. That task should be left for the Ohaneze leaders, South East governors and other Igbo elders. Kanu should not be it at all.
Well, some people may want to say that Kanu commands a huge followership, yes that may be so. In history, we have seen men who had huge followership, with figures like Adolf Hitler but who are not diplomatic, reasonable, lack finesse and didn’t act with decorum. Nnamdi Kanu also falls into the category of these people. He should not be regarded as Igbo leader — he doesn’t have such qualities. He should not be treated or regarded as Igbo leader, he doesn’t merit it at all.
Like I said, Obasanjo should have reflected very well before making that statement.
If the Police is well equipped, I don’t see any reason for Operation Python Dance. Operation Python Dance is nothing but an act of intimidation. Buhari should order troop withdrawal immediately while police should take control of the situation. IPOB issue is a police problem. The situation in Aba and South East has not assumed a frightening situation like the one created by the Boko Haram in the North East.
I’m not impressed at all by the way both Obasanjo (when he was in office) and Buhari handle security situation in the country as retired Generals. It is sad and unfortunate that it is only in Nigeria that soldiers are drafted to scenes of riots and protests. In other climes, even in countries like Cameroon that is very close to us, it is police that is used to quell or contain civil unrests.
Some have canvassed restructuring as the only way out to stop the agitations by IPOB, and other ones across the country, what’s your reaction to that?
I say a capital NO to restructuring. Restructuring is nonsensical. It is not it. To resolve all these agitations is very simple – what we need is constitutional amendment which should be done by the National Assembly, and President Buhari has already agreed to that, and on their own part, the National Assembly has set up committees saddled with that task. Restructuring is a distraction, a very big distraction, we don’t need it.
What we need is Constitutional Amendment to address the issue of how to divide or share national assets. But fiscal federalism is also important, all states can’t be equal, states should be allowed to develop resources in their domain for the development of their regions or areas, and can make certain contributions or pay tax to the central government. There is hardly a state in Nigeria that is not endowed with mineral resources that can be harnessed for commercial purposes. But definitely, all states can’t be equal.
Then whatever constitutional amendment is done by the National Assembly should be subjected to a referendum, and whatever is the outcome will be binding.
There is no need for any restructuring. What I have just highlighted is what we need to do, and I believe that if we do the needful, all these agitations will fizzle out.
On the state of insecurity across the country, the idea of setting up National Guard was recently mooted as a way of complementing the police and other security agencies, how do you see that?
National Guard? To guard what? That’s another avenue to siphon public funds. It is another avenue to create room for looters.
What do we need National Guard for? There is no need for it. Apart from the police, we also have the National Security and Civil Defence Corps, we also have Peace Corps, and at the state levels, you have different para-military outfits saddled with confronting security challenges. Why do we need National Guard again? Why not maintain, equip and sustain those security outfits we have already. There is no need for any National Guard. Yearly, both federal and state governments budget money running into trillions of naira for security purpose, what happens to this fund? How well is the money disbursed for the purpose intended? These are questions people should ask.
With 2019 about two years away, some Nigerians have started campaigning for President Muhammadu Buhari urging him to seek another term, how do you see that development?
It is very unfortunate. Not amusing at all. If APC is a serious political party, by now they should be shopping for another candidate that the party will present in 2019. It is very unfortunate seeing people like Governor El-Rufai, and APC National Chairman saying Buhari would seek a second term in 2019. Second term for what?
Are you saying President Buhari is not eligible to seek re-election?
I’m not saying that. Of course, it is Buhari’s constitutional right to seek another term. But the question you ask is this, will that be in the best interest of Nigeria if Buhari runs in 2019? I say a big NO to that.
It is not that Buhari is not qualified, but it is not in Nigeria’s interest that Buhari should run in 2019. That’s why I’m happy that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has declared his interest to contest in 2019. Others who have interest should also come out.
From the look of things, with Buhari’s health challenge and age, what will we be looking for again in 2019? What does he have to offer in 2019? His health challenges and age are a source of concern.
Although Buhari is incorruptible but that doesn’t mean that he is indispensable. Nigeria can do without Buhari. Presently from what we are seeing, Buhari is not in charge. To me, if Buhari has conscience, he should not run.
It is sad that Nigeria is full of sycophants, if not, why would people like El-Rufai and Oyegun be selling Buhari’s candidacy in 2019 to Nigerians now? These pro-Buhari campaigners are very wrong – they are not helping Nigeria.
On the lingering Boko Haram insurgency in the North East, what is your advice to President Buhari?
The military is doing their best – they should sustain the current momentum and onslaught against the insurgents.
However, like I said earlier, rather than diverting military operations to other parts of the country like Operation Python Dance, Operation Crocodile Smile and others, the Army should focus on battling the insurgents. There should be no distraction. All these operation this and that should be suspended while police should be allowed to deal with civil unrests, protests and riots. This is what they are trained to handle. The military should not be distracted, and this is why I will like President Buhari to order troops withdrawal immediately from Aba and the South East.
It is not every civil disturbance or crisis that the military should be drawn into. The President must also cultivate the bait of using dialogue. At times as the saying goes, it is better to jaw-jaw than to war-war. Dialogue is a good instrument, a valuable key to achieve peace. It is only when there is peace that there can be meaningful development.
What’s your reaction to the recent influx of arms into the country with the discovery and seizure of hundreds of guns, ammunitions and other arms by the Nigeria Customs?
It is a serious development that should be of great concern to the Federal Government.
However, what is curious to me is the revelation that all these seized arms and ammunitions emanated from Turkey. They were imported from Turkey. I’m surprised that the Federal Government has not deemed it fit to take the matter up with the Turkish Government.
There is no way arms can be shipped out of a country without the approval of relevant security agencies in that country. Turkey has a case to answer. The Federal Government should demand an explanation from the Turkish government.
Influx of illegal arms into the country is a matter any serious government should not gloss over. Thorough investigation should not only be carried out, but government should also find ways of checkmating the ugly trend.
If such illegal arms found their way into the hands of some militia groups, organizations making series of agitations here and there including IPOB and even Fulani herdsmen, this government must find a way to arrest the ugly trend.
With the way things are going, some have expressed fears that Nigeria may break up, do you harbour such fears?
Why should Nigeria break? Who wants to break Nigeria? There is no need to entertain any fear or anxiety. What the Federal Government needs to do is the needful which I had earlier recommended in the course of this interview. If constitutional amendment is carried out to do that, there will be peace and contentment by everybody and all these agitations will fizzle out. However, it will be dangerous for the Federal Government to procrastinate in effecting the suggested advice. The earlier the government does the needful, the better.
Nigerians stand to gain nothing from the break up of Nigeria. Break up will even create more problems.

Govs more powerful than Buhari – Obasanjo

Govs more powerful than Buhari – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that state governors are more powerful than President Muhammad Buhari or any other Nigerian President. Speaking with African Arguments in an up close interview, Obasanjo said “in fact, state governors are more powerful than the president. That’s the truth’
In a veiled criticism of President Buhari’s government, he also said the President has not done enough on unemployment and recession,  adding that “Buhari has made some announcements. He has tried to keep on going in the area of agribusiness, but not enough. It is not yet enough to prepare the ground for uninhibited growth of the economy, which we need”.
He further said that he believes that President Buhari can do more for the youths in the area of empowerment. “All youths in Nigeria have legitimate reasons to feel frustrated and angry.”  He advised that if “youth empowerment, skill acquisition and youth employment, education are provided ‘’the ticking bomb of possible youth explosion out of restiveness and anger will subside.”
He went on to say that many of those who are agitating or protesting the sovereign state of Biafra do not know why they are doing so. “The protesters don’t even know what the struggle is all about, but if it gives them false hope, why not hang onto it? Let the elders handle it or ignore it until it loses momentum. There are elders in any community who are still respected…After all, they’re their fathers and mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers, and can still be used effectively”, he said.
On federalism Obasanjo said he does not believe in it and that those talking about devolution and true federalism don’t know what they are talking about. “I don’t believe in true federalism. What is true federalism? Why are they not accountable? What powers do they not have? In fact, state governors are more powerful than the president. That’s the truth. If anybody tells you they want devolution or true federalism, he doesn’t know what he is talking about. The fact that anybody talks about it doesn’t mean it’s right”, he said.
On the N20,000 said to be in his account before he became president in 1999, he said he was a wealthy man despite that and that even then he had the largest poultry farm in Africa then. “Come off it. I had the largest poultry farm before I became president, the largest in Africa. The fact that I have N20,000 in my account does not mean I’m not wealthy.

Nigerians free to live in any part of the country –FG

The Federal Government, yesterday reassured every Nigerian not to panic but to live freely in any part of the country without fear of molestation. The assurance was coming on the heel of growing tension in the country, barely 24 hours to the expiration of the October 1 deadline quit notice issued by the coalition of Arewa youth groups. The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo who gave the assurance also challenged religious bodies and other relevant stakeholders in the project Nigeria to leverage on their influence to jettison every divisive groups and their actions in the country. Osinbajo, who was speaking at the public lecture to mark the 57th independence anniversary of Nigeria organised by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) in Abuja, reiterated the government’s resolve to achieve just and equitable society.
Represented by the Minister of Mine and Steel, Kayode Fayemi, the VP explained that in a society like Nigeria, there is bound to be differences, therefore, we should build on those things that bind us together. His words: “Without a doubt we are marking our independence anniversary this year during period of challenges on our unity as a country. In recent time the federal government had to take far reaching measure to address potential threat on the well being of our republic.
“Nigeria is a vastly plural society with the population of close to 200 million creating and enterprising people consisting over 250 distinct ethnic nationalities and spread over and extensive land mark.
“We have challenges but there is nothing compare with love that the God had blessed us with, I believe our challenges are not insurmountable on the road to building a strong and united Federal Republic. We have all that it takes to turn our diversity to strength and our large population to be seeing as an opportunity rather than a problem.
“We continue to assure every Nigerian that we are committed to upholding the peace and unity of our great country and that every Nigerian can continue to live freely in any part of this country without fear or hindran

Bayern sack Carlo Ancelotti

Bayern sack Carlo Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti has been sacked by Bayern Munich after just over a year in charge, following their 3-0 Champions League defeat at the hands of Paris Saint Germain.
Bayern, German champions last year under Ancelotti and for each of the last five seasons, have had a mixed start to the campaign.
They suffered a 2-0 defeat to Hoffenheim before drawing 2-2 at home to Wolfsburg in the league, having been two goals ahead.
In their official club statement, Bayern said they had ‘split’ from the 58-year-old following internal meetings since the midweek defeat to PSG.
Ancelotti’s assistant Willy Sagnol will take over on a temporary basis, with Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann the early favourite replace the Italian full-time.
Chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge meanwhile has previously discussed the mutual admiration between himself and ex-Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel, and there is a desire to see a German manager take control at Bayern again for the first time since Jupp Heynckes’ reign, which ended in 2013.
Rummenigge said in a statement on the Bayern website: ‘The performance of our team since the start of the season did not meet the expectations we put to them.
‘The game in Paris clearly showed that we had to make decisions. Hasan Salihamidžić [Bayern sporting director] and I spoke to Carlo today and informed him of our decision.
‘I would like to thank Carlo for the cooperation and I regret this development. Carlo is my friend and will remain so, but we had to make a professional decision in the spirit of Bayern.
‘I now expect the team to have a positive reaction and absolute performance, so we can reach our goals for this season.’
Four of Ancelotti’s coaching staff – Italians Davide Ancelotti, Giovanni Mauri, Francesco Mauri and Mino Fulco – have also left Bayern.
Former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager Ancelotti took charge of Bayern in July 2016 following Pep Guardiola’s departure to Manchester City.
He continued Bayern’s domination of the Bundesliga, winning the league by 15 points from second placed RB Leipzig. He has also won the pre-season German Super Cup both this and last season.
However they were beaten 3-2 at home in the German Cup semi-finals by Borussia Dortmund, and in the 2016-17 Champions League quarter finals by Real Madrid. Bayern have not won the major European trophy since 2013.
There have also been problems off the pitch – goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is out until after Christmas with injury and his replacement, Sven Ulreich, has not convinced, making a bad error against Wolfsburg to concede the first goal.
Main striker Robert Lewandowski has criticised the club’s transfer policy, saying they need to spend more money, while there is also disharmony among German fans and media due to Thomas Muller’s lack of game time.
The signing of James Rodriguez on a two-year loan has divided opinion, while the retirements of Philipp Lahm and Xabi Alonso have left a leadership vacuum.
